| what am i going to do when i finish residency? a question many people ask........ and one that is not easy to answer. well, at least regarding the long-term it's not easy to say, but at least for the near future, there is an answer! i have accepted a job at kaiser panorama city. the job is as a 'hospitalist' -- i work as a hospital-based internal medicine doc taking care of patients who are admitted to the hospital (either as their primary doctor or as a consultant to the surgeons), admit patients into the hospital, or take care of those in the '24 hour observation unit'. it was a hard decision to make -- do i continue in medicine or leave and head back out into the business world? but without a clear goal (let's say a 5-10 year career plan) in mind, it would seem silly to walk away from medicine altogether at this juncture. so i opted to stay and gain some more medical experience and position myself for a possible management role within kaiser, for now. we'll see how things go from here. my family and i are certain that god is leading my career to this hospital b/c of how things played out with jobs and job offers. won't bore you with the details, but it became very clear where the right place to work would be. as for the business stuff, there is still a need to keep the skills sharp and maintain some biz work for the resume. so this year, i created a management company (let's call it KPM, Inc) that will focus on creating and managing a series of private investment funds. these funds will be investments in private companies and real estate, not stocks/bonds/mutual funds. i've already opened the first of these funds (let's call is KFI, LLC) that will profit share in manufacturing activities. quite lucrative if you know the high-end garment industry. things are going well and i've raised quite a bit of cash already. yields are good too (investors end up with ~4% returns each month, 50% annually), if you can stomach some risk. anyhow, yeah, lots on my plate with residency, job search, business launch, 5 month old baby. but it's typical. what's new with all of you out there? |
